The Spirit Of God
“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him– the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding.”
All throughout the bible we read a lot about the “Holy Spirit,” the “works of the spirit,” and the Holy Ghost; but who is he, and what does he do in our daily life? The Holy Spirit is the spirit of the living God, and when invited he will come and dwell inside of us (1Corinthians 3:16) helping to lead us into “all truth”(John 16:13). For some Christian denominations and especially new believers the idea of the “Holy Spirit” can seem a bit strange so what exactly is his role in our lives?
1.The Holy Spirit Helps Us
One of the numerous titles for the Holy Spirit is “The Helper.”(John 14:26) Much like the name suggests, he helps us along on our path and leads us into Gods purpose for our lives. The Holy Spirit helps us to walk in the ways of God (Psalms 128:1) and assists us in our decisions through gentle promptings, urgings, and nudges within our spirit.
2.The Holy Spirit Teaches Us
When Jesus was explaining the role of the Holy Spirit to his disciples he called him the “Spirit of Truth” (John 16:13). In this sense, the Holy Spirit is a teacher that among many other things teaches us how to discern the truth from fallacy (Especially when it relates to God and His Word). “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth…”
3.The Holy Spirit Gives Us Spiritual Gifts
1 Corinthians 12:4 tells us that the Holy Spirit is the one that distributes and endows us with the “Gifts of the Spirit.” These are the special spiritual gifts that are given and distributed among the body. The 9 gifts of the Spirit that are given as he wills, are:
- The Gift of Wisdom
- The Gift of Knowledge
- The Gift of Great Faith
- The Gift of Healing
- The Gift of Miracles
- The Gift of Discerning of Spirits
- The Gift of Prophecy
- The Gift Of Speaking in Tounges
- The Gift of Interpreting Tounges
4.The Holy Spirit Convicts
If you were to ask a nonbeliever whether they feel “convicted” when they do things they know they should not do, or whether they have a “conscience” or not, chances are they will say yes. This happens because they do have a conscience, they do get convicted, but it is not by a conscience conviction is still by the Spirit of God. This nonbelieving world may not know the Holy Spirit, but that does not mean it does not still work in their lives. Part of the mission of the Holy Spirit’s purpose here on earth is to convict the world of sin, prove the world of God’s pure and perfect righteousness, and warn of impending Judgement.(John 16:8)
5.The Holy Spirit Endows Believers To Do Great Things
When Jesus said in John 14:12, “I tell you the truth, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these”, it was through the power of the Holy Spirit that he planned for the apostles to accomplish them. Just as the 12 were given the ability to do great exploits through the power of the Holy Spirit and as we also go out into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth, the Holy Spirit will also give the ability to do the same.
