“I Was Just Happy To Know They’re Alive And Doing Alright.”

10 years ago, Master Sgt. Michael Maroney saved the life of a 3-year-old girl during Hurricane Katrina. He never got to know her name, and he wanted to see how she was doing 10 years later. So, back in March, he set up the hashtag #FindKatrinaGirl hoping that he’d be able to find her through the power of social media.

Then, last week, something amazing happened; a friend of the girl’s reached out to Michael’s son, and from there they were able to reconnect again!

The girl’s name is Leshay Brown, and she is now 13 years old. She lives in a happy home with her family in Waveland, Mississippi.

“Words cannot describe how I felt hearing their voices again at that moment. I was like, ‘Is this real? Is this really her? I’ve been waiting for 10 years for this, and finally I found her. I had a stupid smile across my whole face the whole time,” said Michael.
