Dr. Stern, a dermatologist, wants people to know of nail melanoma, a type of cancer that develops under the nail. People might mistake this cancer as an injury on the nail bed so it is important to have it looked at.
“People will sometimes develop an early melanoma and think it’s an injury and they don’t even really realize they’re supposed to go to their dermatologist,” Stern said.
Usually, nail melanoma is most prominently found on the thumb, the big toe, and the index finger. Here are some of the warning signs:
– If the stripe is very dark
– If there are blurred borders
– If there are changes in a stripe that’s been there
– Medical history
