A Terrible Representation Of Christians
Police Chief Michael Inserra announced Wednesday that a counseling session at Word of Life Christian Church in New Hartford, New York turned physical. The counseling session resulted in the death of one young man and the hospitalization of his brother.
The parents of the two teens, Bruce T. Leonard, 65, and Deborah R. Leonard, 59, are both facing one count of first-degree manslaughter. The Leonards bail were both set at $100,000. The four other church members that were involved are being charged with second-degree assault.
Lucas Leonard was the name of the 19-year-old who was tragically pronounced dead at a hospital in nearby Utica.
His 17-year-old brother Christopher is in serious condition after suffering from blunt force trauma, according to the police.
The congregation held what Inserra called a “counseling session” after Sunday night’s service for the two Leonard brothers. According to Inserra:
“Both brothers were continually subjected to physical punishment over the course of several hours in the hopes that each would confess to prior sins and ask for forgiveness.”
As the investigation into the death of the 19-year-old Leonard will continue and we ask for prayers for everyone involved. I pray that the world doesn’t see this as another case of Christians going to the extreme. As Christians, we need to ban together to bring understanding to the world. We stand for the Love of Christ that was freely given when he died on the cross for us.
We come to you with heavy hearts as we witness more tragedy in our world. We ask that you welcome your two sons, Lucas and Christopher, as they come to you earlier that they should have. We ask that you lay a hedge of healing and understanding over all of those involved as they now will have to deal with both the loss of their sons and with what they did to them. Please Lord lay your hands of healing over Christopher as he now has to recover from the wounds on his body and the wound of losing a brother. We ask all of these things in your name,
