A US student has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor by North Korea’s supreme court for trying to steal a banner that honored former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

Otto Warmbier was sentenced on Wednesday for “crimes against the state”, and was ordered to perform 15 years of hard labor. The banner that Warmbier tried to steal bore a political slogan. The banner was presented as evidence during his 1-hour trial.

The United States was quick to condemn the punishment as politically motivated. The US urged North Korea to pardon the student from Wyoming, Ohio, and releases him on humanitarian grounds.
