The Darkside Of Glitter
Warning: Story Contains Graphic Images Of Surgery
To say what happened is a tragedy would be an understatement. When you think of glitter, it usually brings up images and memories of childhood crafts, fun school art projects, family celebrations, costumes and dress-up, or precious time with the children. But for one mother named Caayi, glitter had a dark side that she never considered, and her life has been changed by it forever.
On the photo-sharing site Imgur, Caayi began to tell her horrific story on the dangers of the fun and reflective art product. Sharing her personal thoughts and fears, she went through the ordeal thought-by-thought, image by image. She worried, this may be the last picture anyone might ever get to see
She worried, this may be the last picture anyone might ever get to see of her again without her terrible injury. A warning to parents, and all people who use the product. There are serious dangers that glitter can cause and she wants everyone to know.
“I will never see this face in the mirror again… something similar at some point, but never quite this,” she begins to explain in a post on Imgur.

Here is her story…
“It was a totally normal day, [when] I sat down to do some simple arts & crafts with my kids.”
That is the moment when she unwittingly got a small piece of glitter stuck in her eye. At first, she thought it was no big deal, it’s glitter, it must happen all the time. But when she couldn’t get it out, and the glitter began rubbing against her eye more and more irritatingly, she began to worry.
Nothing seemed to work to remove it, and after an entire month of just dealing with the irritation, it started getting into more and more sensitive positions.
As she described it, “Aggressive fungus as introduced by foreign body”. The glitter went bouncing through my eye jelly leaving a million cuts and introducing a fungus. The fungus latched on to the warm dark environment on the inside of my eyeball and just started making itself right at home like there wasn’t already a bunch of established stuff happening in there.
By this time, the injury to her eye from the glitter had gotten to a point of no return. That’s when she finally decided to seek medical attention. She commented, “Stupid freak accident with glitter getting into my eye is going to cause me to need surgery. Glitter ruptured the cornea and nothing is controlling the infection.”
She was initially brought in for a corneal transplant. When that surgery failed, they proceeded to do a second attempt at corneal surgery. That surgery also failed to solve her problem.
As you can see from the eye chart she posted, in the last few images, the operation that she now had to look forward to- and it wasn’t pretty.
“There was just no saving the eye. [After] 2 failed cornea transplants, medicinal injections, drops, oral meds, etc. Nothing [could] ever really control the raging infection.”
Here she is showing off her “fancy eyewear on the way to the biopsy.” Her sensitivity to light during this time was terrible.
This is the part that gets graphic…If you are squeamish you may want to skip this part.
You have been warned.
“At my last check up they discovered opportunistic growths in the eyeball and that it was starting to cave in on itself in the back. If this happened, and it ruptured, the fungus would be pushed into my bloodstream and cause systemic sepsis. There was even a chance that the little piece of glitter could have killed me.”
By the end of the treatments and surgeries, her vision was completely gone. Who would have ever thought one mistake with on piece of glitter would have lead to so many problems.
Despite the devastating circumstances, she tried very hard throughout to make light of her situation.”They are saying I am 6-8 weeks away from having the cosmetic portion of the new eye. Also, once the mold is made for it, I can take that mold and have all kinds of cool eyes made.”
More extreme graphic images to come
During her biopsy surgery, she snapped this picture of the procedure.
After her surgery here is what her eye looked like.
After multiple and extreme surgeries in doctors attempts to save the eye, all she got was another fancy eye-patch.
People following her posts began to ask about her hairstyle change to which she replied, “Those of you following the Glitter Eye Incident posts have asked where the hair all went. The drops and chemicals used to try and save the eye all dripped down into the hair, essentially melting it.”
Her eye was swollen shut for some time post surgery, and her sight has not yet been restored. To date, her eye looks a little bit better but she still has no vision, and if it fails the options look grim.
The whole ordeal has been terrible, some kind followers decided to set up a gofundme page to help with her upcoming surgeries. You can also help by going to that link. We will continue to to report on her progress as Caayi continues to update.
