It is known as monosodium glutamate E621 or MSG, which is a white powder-like substance used to intensify the flavor of preserved, frozen and junk foods. First discovered in 1907, in Japan, by a man named Ikeda Kikunae, MSG is a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid. In natural foods like tomatoes, potatoes, and other fruits and vegetables it is not unhealthy, but when added to processed foods it acts similar in it’s effect to a drug. MSG stimulates the cells in the brain and begins to change specific genes that impact taste. After a while of eating foods that contain the product, it can lead to an addiction to the many unhealthy foods that it’s contained in.

The substance is popular in the United States because it is an easy way to make food taste better, which in turn helps to sell the foods it is added to. Any product that contains more than half a gram can be dangerous. In several past studies where it was tested regularly on mice, it caused them to go blind after prolonged ingestion of the product.

To keep you and your family healthy it is best to check the label of the foods that you buy, and when it comes to monosodium glutamate E621, it’s probably best to try and stay away.
