Dog Sneaks Out Of Kennel At Night To Care For Crying Foster Puppies
At a Barker’s pet motel and foster care center in Canada, Maggie the dog had recently been a mother. Although all of her own litter of puppies had already been adopted out through the Humane Society, the motherly nature in Maggie remained strong. One night, after hearing the cries of another litter of newborn puppies nearby, those motherly instincts took over once again. Workers who had been watching the cameras at the center were surprised to find that she had snuck out of her kennel and cuddled up to care for another group of puppies, tending to the litter as if they were her own.
A Barker’s employee named Alex Aldred told ABC News, “We’ve never really seen it before, where a dog sneaks out to some puppies and is so excited to see them.” He described, “We left work and were watching the surveillance cameras while we were out and we saw Maggie was sitting in front of the puppies’ kennels. It seemed that the mother dog needed the puppy love as much as the frightened puppies needed her.”
Deanna Thompson from Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society explained, “It’s innate in a lot of female dogs, especially if they’ve had a litter in the past. It’s just in their nature. We’ve seen it in a lot of dogs even with male dogs when they hear other puppies crying they want to console them and make sure they’re feeling safe.”
