Chaos filled the streets of Pakistan over the weekend when an Easter Celebration at a popular park turned deadly because of a suicide bomb attack. The AP reports, that “an explosion in the Pakistani city of Lahore has killed [at this time] 65 people and injured [at least] 300.” Among the many victims, the overwhelming majority have been women and children.
According to AP News, Senior police officer Haider Ashraf said:
“the explosion took place close to the children’s rides in Gulshan-e-Iqbal park. He says the explosion appeared to have been a suicide bombing, but investigations were ongoing. The area was crowded with Christians celebrating the Easter holidays.”
The sprawling Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park is known for it’s wide lawns, amusement rides for children that including a go-kart track, as well as a lake for boating and other water activities. What started as a day of celebration in the crowded park, has given way to images of death and destruction as the aftermath has already begun to flood the internet. With each new update, the death toll seemingly continues to rise and more and more victims are being discovered by the hour.
The United State has given a statement condemning the attacks saying:
“This cowardly act in what has long been a scenic and placid park has killed dozens of innocent civilians and left scores injured. We send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed, just as our thoughts and prayers are with the many injured in the explosion,” said an official statement issued in Washington.
“The United States stands with the people and government of Pakistan at this difficult hour. We will continue to work with our partners in Pakistan and across the region, as together we will be unyielding in our efforts to root out the scourge of terrorism.”
