Girl Lives In A Bucket After Losing The Use Of Her Legs And Arms
Rahma Haruna’s rare condition has forced her to live a life of containment. She lives in a plastic bucket since her arms and legs stopped growing.
The 19-year-old was born perfectly healthy in the village of Lahadin Makole, close to the Nigerian city of Kano. That is when doctors noticed that she had stopped reaching growth milestones that a normal infant goes through.
“From 6 months when she learned how to sit, that was when it began,” explained her mother, Fadi. “She started with a fever and that was it. Then stomach pains. Then her body parts like hands and legs … She didn’t learn how to crawl.”
The family has sold most of what they owned in hopes of finding a treatment for their daughter Rahma. It is Rahma’s attitude about the whole situation that gives her parents inspiration to continue:
“I thank God in everything I do,” she said. “I want to start a business. A grocery store and anything people buy, that is what I want.”
