Sometimes All That Is Wanted Is A Chance
When the rain started to pour down on James Eppler, he quickly sought refuge on the porch of an unoccupied rental property owned by Chris Crever. Eppler, a 28-year-old homeless man from Eugene Oregon, had been homeless since he was 16-years-old. His night’s were usually spent sleeping under bridges, or wherever he could find temporary shelter. For the time being, Crever’s front porch kept Eppler off the ground and out of the elements. That was until the owner of the property came by and saw James and his friend abiding there.
When the owner of the newly purchased fixer-upper, stopped by the property and found James and his friend sitting on his porch he respectfully asked that the two find another place to stay. So, James packed up the few belongings he had and thanked Mr. Crever for being polite in handling the situation.
Impressed by Eppler’s attitude, Crever offered up something amazing to him. He told him, “Listen, meet me here at the property on Monday morning at 8:30 AM” and he would give him some work. The work Crever offered ironically involved cleaning, fixing, and restoring the same property James was displaced from.
For James, it was a dream come true. Gracious and grateful, he arrived at the home on Monday, 45 minutes early and ready to work. Aside from pay, Crever also provided a room to stay in as well as toiletries to clean himself up.
“I saw him as a person, one who I think just really wanted help,” Crever said. “It makes me feel good, but it’s not about me. It’s about providing an opportunity for James.”
Eppler said he’s looking forward to having a place to go and a reason to wake up every day. The job is a good start, but James is looking for a full-time job once this job is completed.
The property investor hopes his story of goodwill might inspire others to reach out and lend a hand to those in need. Eppler said that “For this to happen, especially around the holiday’s it’s almost like God smiling down.”
Whatever you do, work heartily, as unto the Lord
