Deadly Date Night

This past Sunday night, in Inglewood CA, a couple named Kisha Michael and Marquintan Sandlin, had just been out on a date. Tired out from a long night, at around 3 a.m. the pair pulled their car to the side of the road where they parked to take a nap. Later that morning police arrived on the scene and approach the car, from that point it would be the last time the two parent would be seen alive again.

At first, it seemed to be a completely justified use of force. The statement by police officers was that they approached an occupied vehicle parked on the side of the road, where one of the occupants; a woman with a gun, refused to comply with their orders. Seeing the weapon and refusing officers orders, police ran for cover and after openly refusing, and confronting officers, they opened fire. Sounds completely  justified, right?

Well, it just so happens that the next day, actual details about the incident began to emerge, bringing to light many more facts about exactly what happened that night. As it turns out, both of the occupants in the vehicle were unconscious or asleep at the time of police arriving- that single fact changed the entire play of events.

Inglewood Mayor, James Butts, in response to questions about the incident on Tuesday, said, “Both the man and woman who were mortally wounded during an officer-involved shooting were unconscious when Inglewood police first responded to where they were sitting (asleep) in a car. For at least 45 minutes, police attempted “to rouse” them in an effort “to de-escalate the situation.”

Butts, in an attempt to defend his officers said, “Obviously at some point they were conscious because somebody felt threatened.” According to NBC News, “In a police radio transmission moments after the shooting, an officer can be heard saying the woman had a gun in her right hand.”

The entire incident begins to sound like a jumbled mess of facts that don’t really fit together in any concise or obvious way. What is clear, is that the two were both parents. Kisha Michael was a single mother of three sons, and Marquintan Sandlin was a single father of four daughters all of which will now have to grow up without both parents.

Sandlin’s cousin said, “He moved out of LA to get away from all this nonsense.” Michael apparently had moved out to Victorville recently but was in Los Angeles to visit with family and friends. He was described by family members as “a loving father” who was trying to raise his children the right way. They told NBC News, “Why either would have had a gun, family members said they did not know. But they believe law enforcement should have been able to handle the situation without resorting to deadly force.”

What a sad story. Please pray for the family of both victims of this horrible tragedy.
