Unusually Enormous Nautilus
On December 24th, 2015 off of the coast of Japan, this humongous squid which is rarely even seen, was caught on film. Divers were shocked to see the elusive creature swimming alongside them. This cephalopod, was estimated to be about 12 feet long but by the time a squid like this reaches maturity, it can get up to 43 feet.
Researchers know very little about the Giant Squid since it spends most of it’s time in deep waters along the oceans floors. It wasn’t until 2004 that marine biologists were able to get the first footage of the creature, and the last time it was caught on film was back in 2012; the new recording of the giant creature is becoming big news.
The sighting at Toyama Bay is unusual for the Giant Squid, far from where the animal is thought to spend most of it’s time. The lucky diver that filmed the encounter, Akinobu Kimura, told CNN, “I guided the squid toward the ocean, several hundred meters from the area it was found in, and it disappeared into the deep sea.”
