Mothers have a natural instinct to take care of their young, from anything that is perceived as a danger or red flag. Animals too, have a tendency to be overly protective in caring for their babies, even at a cost to their own lives.

Petunia, a stray dog, that was known throughout her community, had been homeless for some time, so Hope for Paws, a rescue organization, found her in a parking lot and sought out to give her a new start. She seemed wary to strangers and unsure of whether or not she could fully trust them, so she quickly took refuge under a car.

Eldad Hagar, the organization’s founder, knelt down in hopes of retrieving her from under the vehicle. He managed to touch her, but she quickly became nervous and retrieved. So, Mr. Hagar decided to simply grab her and rescue her, without prodding, recognizing that she’d be frightened, but would soon realize that she was in good and loving hands. Once she was in his arms, he realized that she was lactating, meaning that she had recently gave birth.

Petunia’s puppy was found in a brush nearby and was promptly reunited with her nervous and anxious mother. Reassuring themselves that there were no other puppies to be found, they took the duo to a veterinarian.

Petunia’s puppy was named Petals, a very lovely and appropriate name, and hopefully they will soon be adopted into a loving family.
