Christian McPhilamy, an 8-year-old boy, began growing out his hair when he learned about St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Christian and his mom, Deeanna Thomas have a nightly ritual where they take an iPad and search for whatever fascinates him on Google. On one particular day Christian saw the video below and it changed him forever. That night Christian and him mom researched a hair donation charity. Immediately Christian knew he was going to help.
“And he said, ‘I want to do that,'” Thomas, 28, recalled. “I was blown away… usually when Christian sets his mind to something, he pretty much goes with it. He doesn’t let anything falter his goals. I was pretty confident that he was actually going to follow through with it.”
Although classsmates, strangers, and ever adults called him a “girl”, nothing could stop him from growing out his hair for a child who has lost theirs.
Two years later, the second grader at Ocean Breeze Elementary School chopped it all off on May 20 and donated it to Children With Hair Loss.
The charity is Michigan-based that provides a free hair peace annually to children who have medically-related hair loss including cancer patients and burn victims, according to Today.
“My hands were shaking. My heart felt like it was going to explode,” Thomas said about the haircut. “It was just incredible.”
As for Christian, he said it feels good to have short hair again. Somewhere, another child will be feeling good, too, because of Christian.
